Wausau, Wisconsin
MKM architecture + design served as design architect, proudly collaborating with Angus-Young Architects/Engineers to re-define North Central Health Care’s (NCHC) aging campus located on the Wausau river. NCHC serves three counties in central Wisconsin offering mental health, addiction, skilled nursing, developmental disability, warm water physical therapy and adult protective services for North Central Wisconsin. Design and planning focused on multiple service lines including a robust outpatient psychiatric and therapy services department, behavioral hospital, youth hospital, medically monitored substance abuse center, adult CBRF, administration and support departments, and a 165-bed nursing facility described below.
The existing Mount View health center has been re-imagined into multiple small-house style neighborhoods serving 16 residents each. A new four-story building includes physical therapy, food service, nursing administration and a community bistro on the first floor. The three upper floors include six paired small house nursing care environments totaling 96 private resident rooms, neighborhood dining, living spaces and an outdoor roof garden overlooking the community bistro courtyard. The new building is directly connected to a new warm-water pool that serves residents and the greater community.
