Zachary Benedict, AIA, LEED AP, presented the opening keynote of the 2024 IRHA conference, exploring the future of rural health and placemaking.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Lafayette, Indiana.
What interested you in pursuing a career in business development?
My path has been a journey. I was initially inspired to work in healthcare by my oldest daughter’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis when she was five years old. I decided that working in endocrinology hit a little too close to home, so I went back to school and pursued a degree in radiography, which lead to 12 years of working in healthcare. I use that healthcare experience to connect with clients and potential clients, serving in my role as Director of Business Development.
What motivates you to come into work every day at MKM?
The team. I thoroughly enjoy the team of people that I get to work with and greatly appreciate their focus on meaningful design and unwavering customer service.
Where do you look for inspiration?
Nature. Just take a look outside and try not to be inspired by a tenacious chipmunk chewing on a rock!
How do you recharge during your free time?
I love to clean and organize. It is sad…I know.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
Anywhere I can go with family and friends! My current favorite place is Florida, due to our daughter living there. I loved visiting Germany with my sisters in 2010. I would love to visit all the National Parks too.

-Andy Bernard, The Office.
What was the last book your read?

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
I started riding when I was 9, and bought my first horse at 14. “T” named, for the t-shaped star on his forehead, was very versatile and we enjoyed competing in English, Western and gaming.
