This year's selections allowed us to share our thoughts on various topics, from placemaking to civil rights.
Where did you grow up?
(Dad joke incoming) Mostly vertically. *chuckles*
I was born in Rocky River, Ohio, and raised a snowball’s throw away from the Wisconsin border in Gurnee, Illinois.
What interested you in pursuing a career in architecture/interior design?
When I was growing up, my outlet was thinking creatively. From drawing to writing, I enjoyed putting my thoughts on paper and documenting the world around me. (Stereotypically) I also loved to play with blocks, K’nex, and Legos with my brother and sister. The architecture route was solidified in high school when I was able to take courses in mechanical/architectural drafting and wood/metals shop, where I could explore the profession in more detail.

What motivates you to come to work every day at MKM?
My wife and I often remind each other before we leave the house to “go change the world.” The MKM Team helps me do that every day.
Where do you look for inspiration?
For me, inspiration comes from anything at any time. A great idea could come from having coffee with my toddler and wife in the morning, to maybe working on the renovation of our 100-year-old home in the afternoon. I love how inspiration can arrive in all forms and times.
How do you recharge during your free time?
I consider myself an extroverted introvert, so I recharge by simply being quiet and snuggling with our Westie, Madi.

Which projects are you most proud to have worked on?
This is a tough question. Throughout my career, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work alongside much smarter people than me on cool projects across the world. I think the “project” I’m most proud of was not really a project at all, but rather the effort I was able to provide towards local hospital networks during the COVID-19 patient surge in 2020. My job was to evaluate existing buildings and create new floor plans, illustrating to the hospital and FEMA how to safely get the most patients into and out of the building. We also had to provide separate operational flows for infected patients and well patients going to the hospital for their care. It felt great to use my medical planning background for my community and give back during an unprecedented time.
Where is your favorite place to travel?
During our time in Arizona, my little family believed the best way to travel was in short bursts or weekend visits. This provided us a great opportunity to get quick snapshots of many amazing places that people may have never heard of; all of which were just a two-hour drive away from our home. We have fond memories of camping in Flagstaff, dining in Sedona, wine tasting in Wilcox, and hiking at the Grand Canyon.

What is your favorite quote?
Although there are quite a few quotes I like to reflect on, I can’t help but choose something from my current favorite show: “It’s not about being perfect, it’s about trying your best” – Bandit (Bluey)
What was the last book you read?
Goodnight Moon to my 18-month-old before bed. I also do some light reading in flip-up animal books.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
My wife and I are both in the healthcare architectural profession, often as competitors! She’s also my greatest consultant when I don’t know an answer.
